The development of verbal (spoken) language is primarily an auditory task. The deaf or hearing impaired child is fitted with a suitable hearing aid or cochlear implant to make most speech sounds audible.
After the hearing aid or cochlear implant fitting, the child receives intensive auditory training to assist him or her in developing speech through listening.
